Investing in wine is by no means a new phenomenon – long before the mid-1990s when fine wine became truly ‘global’, wily buyers would often buy more than they intended to drink, selling the excess wine at a later date to fund subsequent purchases.

In the 1990s the demand for the best wines from Bordeaux boomed as the ‘traditional’ market for these wines – namely Europe and North America – was joined by a new market in the Far East. Prices increased; despite the drop in the cost of some top Bordeaux châteaux in 1998 due to the Asian economic collapse, the general trend in wine prices has remained an up-ward one.

While it is difficult to find entirely accurate records or data, it is fair to say that the prices for the very best wines have risen over the past 10 years or so; just like with any other investment, quieter periods have been followed by busy ones. The correlation between the financial market and fine wine market traditionally is relatively small, but the more people will invest in wine, the more this market will likely behave like an investment market.

As the global demand and consumption of the world’s finest wines increases, an opportunity presents itself for acquiring a collection of wines that will yield a financial return over the longer term.
